The
Issue Is:
WAL-MART
PLANS SUPERCENTER EXPANSION IN THE
HEART OF CHICO'S IMPACTED BUSINESS AREA!
At the site of the existing Wal-Mart store on Forest Avenue!
THE PROPOSED WAL-MART SUPERCENTER WOULD BE MORE THAN 200,000 SQ. FT.!
Wal-Mart plans to expand the existing Wal-Mart into a 208,000 sq. ft. Supercenter with discount grocery and garden departments, as well as a gas station. The store will operate 24 hours/day, 7days/week.
It is important to view this proposal in light of
Wal-Mart's plans for the entire north valley. Since CARE's involvement in this issue:
- In Redding. a Supercenter has been approved.
In Red Bluff an expansion into a Supercenter has been approved.
In Willows an expansion into a Supercenter has been approved.
In Paradise, Wal-Mart has applied to buy property on which a 190,000 sq. ft. store is to be built.
In Anderson a Supercenter opened in June, '06.
In Oroville application has been made for expansion into a Supercenter.
If
all of these are built, there will be a Supercenter in
Chico, a Supercenter 23 miles away in Oroville,
another 31 miles away in Willows and a Wal-Mart
14 miles from Chico in Paradise.
Fifty
percent of Wal-Mart Super Centers is devoted to discount grocery.
Chico already has Winco, Food Maxx
and CostCo. Each offers discount prices, consumer
choice and decent wages and benefits. A Supercenter will close
at least one of these stores, reducing both consumer choice and
the number of well paying jobs that support a strong middle class
and promote a viable local economy.
Chico already has a Wal-Mart. That is not the issue.
We oppose the expansion of the existing store into a Supercenter because it is unnecessary and inconsistent with responsible development.
CARE is working to prevent the expansion of the existing Wal-Mart
into a Supercenter. We believe we will be successful
if we make our voices heard.
